Who Has the Most Tries in NRL History?
Here, we honour those men who have scored more tries in the NRL than any other. Australian rugby has seen numerous players whose style of play and careers have completely encapsulated the nation and changed how the game is played across the country.
But the players who provide more thrills and spills are those who score time and time again. For those who enjoy watching the game or partaking in online sports betting in New Zealand and Australia, the highest scorers are a common talking point. Here, we go back in time to honour the five greatest scorers in the history of the NRL.
Terry Lamb
Lamb may have played for the Western Suburbs, but his career was mainly spent at the Canterbury Bulldogs. He first put on a short for the Suburbs in 1980 before departing the team in '83, one of his best seasons. Lamb moved to the Bulldogs the following season when he went on to score 123 tries until he walked away from the game some 12 years later. After winning the premiership in He also won seven Dally M Five-Eighth of the Year awards, which remains a record.
Andrew Ettingshausen
Ettingshausen played exclusively for the Cronulla Sharks. While he mainly played at centre, he also played at wing and full-back, and while he failed to secure any honours, he did make the Grand Final in 1997. Ettingshausen did win the Minor Premiership in 1999, however, before retiring after playing rugby for 18 years.
Billy Slater
The full-back scored 190 tries while playing for a single team: the Melbourne Storm. The legend only retired in 2018, having scored more tries than any other full-back in the history of the game, and more than any other Storm player, past or present. Slater won two premiership titles with the Storm, and even won the man of the match during the team's second title. He's also won Full-back of the Year on three occasions.
Steve Menzies
Menzies isn't a player who was likely to make this list, seeing as he played in the back-row for most of his career. However, he's scored as many tries as Billy Slater, with 180 tries for the Northern Eagles and Manly. No other forward has scored as many tries. Menzies also appeared in five Grand Finals, and won two titles in his career.
Ken Irvine
Ken Irvine was one of the most feared wingers in Australia during a 15-year career that began in 1958. In that time, he played with both Manly and North Sydney. It was at Sydney, however, where which he became a star, scoring an unbelievable 171 tries in just 176 matches. Not only that, he also held the 100-yard World Sprint record in 1963 after he ran 91m in 9.3 seconds. He also won two premiership titles with Manly, with another 41 tries to boot. His 212 tries in 236 games is a record in first-grade rugby, and no other player has managed to score 200 tries in a club career. And certainly, no-one is set to top that this year, no matter exciting this NRL season may be.
Irvine passed away at just 50-years-old in 1990 after he lost his battle with leukaemia. Some 14 years later, however, he joined the Australian Rugby Hall of Fame, and was also named a member of Manly's Dream Team, as well as one of the 100 Greatest Australian Players. Another honour was bestowed upon him in 2018 when David Fusitua'a was the first player to win the Ken Irvine Medal, with 23 tries.
